Iconic Commercial Property in London – #3 Lloyds of London

In the latest in our continuing series on iconic examples of commercial property in London we take a look at one of the capitals most unique and distinctive buildings, the Lloyds Tower.

This legendary building, also known as the inside-out building after its rather distinctive appearance, was designed by the acclaimed architect Richard Rogers. The building was constructed back in 1986 and in total over 33,000 cubic meters of concrete was used in its construction.

The nickname of the inside-out building derives from the fact that all its vents, stairwells, and lift shafts are located on the outside of the building, making the building rather unique from a design point of view. This design was chosen with the idea in mind that these elements could be repaired or replaced easily without having to venture into the buildings interiors, and with many of its facilities located on the outside of the building, this also left the interior rather uncluttered.

The building consists of a number of towers surrounding a central space, the focal point of which is its large underwriting room which houses the Lutine bell, an iconic symbol of Lloyds.

The building stands at 88 meters tall and has a total of 14 floors. Interestingly each floor of the property is modular is design, meaning that they can be altered by the addition or removal of partitions or walls. Whilst the first four floors of the building are connected by a series of escalators, those wishing to reach the higher floors must venture into one of the building’s exterior lifts.

As the name suggests the building is home to the insurance institution Lloyds of London and is located in London’s main financial district. In 2011 the building was awarded Grade 1 listing, making it the youngest building ever to achieve this status. Interestingly the building also has a place in popular culture and has appeared in a number of films, including the 2008 film The Ghost writer.
