Your Ultimate Guide to Commercial Building Insurance

If you are in possession of a commercial building, you will want to make sure that you are covering your assets by acquiring the right building insurance for your property.

There are many different levels of cover, as well as different policies which will cover different types of building. It is important that you are thinking carefully about what you will need to cover. Ultimately, this means being truthful and accurate; there’s no point in trying to omit information in order to try and get a cheaper quote – you will just end up putting your building at risk of not being fully covered.

So, what do you need to think about?

Do You Need Commercial Building Insurance?

Building insurance is essentially the same concept as contents insurance which you will (or should) have in place in your own home.

Rather than covering the items that you have in your home, commercial building insurance will cover the permanent fixtures of the property, such as the walls, flooring, roofing and windows, and can often cover some of the fixtures and fittings that you will have installed to, such as any fitted bathrooms or kitchens.

Every building should be covered by building insurance, no matter what it is used for.  It is intended to act as a financial safety net should anything go wrong with the building, meaning that your insurance will cover damage that may occur.

Not every policy will be the same, so it’s important to look at what the insurer will cover, but you will generally find that most will cover you for:

  • Fire related damages
  • Damage from natural sources such as storms or floods
  • Vandalism

It is best to discuss what is covered with an insurance provider, and find out what isn’t covered by their policy.

How Much Cover Do You Need?

You will usually discuss what cover you need with an insurer and they will be able to give you a quote. They will be able to determine the level of cover that you need, and then find you the best quote.

It is important to remember that, as with most things, cheapest isn’t always best. Quotes often differ depending on what the property will be used for; for example, night clubs will have different quotes to those of retail stores.
